Provo, Utah – Over the weekend, the Cougars took down fierce in-state rivals Utah, and Weber State in their first two collegiate club games of 2018. With these two wins, the Cougars extend their unbeaten run to 22 games and have yet to lose in collegiate club play. On Friday, the boys opened up their campaign against Utah, and started eager to play. In the first two minutes, Captain Tanner Whitworth pounced on an errant pass and slipped a ball to teammate Ace Phillips for a tap in finish. The Cougs dominated possession of the match, and the game finished 6-1 with goals from Ace Phillips (2), Christian Bain, Seth Fankhauser, Ben Jenson, and Tanner Whitworth. After a threat of cancellation due to poor air quality on Friday, the fans really came out to support as we beat the Utes.
Saturday, against Weber State, the team again came out firing and excited to ball out. In the first 10 minutes, Christian Bain and Jake Ence converted goals for the blue and white to put the score 2-0. Again, the Cougs dominated possession, but struggled to finish against the Wildcats. For the Cougs, the defense was stout, led by senior Mitchell Scott and Brendan Ottman. The Wildcats failed to tally a shot on goal the entire game. The score remained stagnant until the last 10 minutes of the game, where the Cougars finished the Wildcats off with 3 additional goals. The goals came from Ace Phillips, Skyler Ulicny, and Seth Fankhauser.
Next week, the boys head up to Logan to face Utah State on Friday, September 21. Last season, the Aggies held the Cougars to their only tie in collegiate club play (1-1). Additionally, the Cougars will face UVU on Saturday, September 22 on South Field, 7pm. Watch the game live via BYUSoccer’s YouTube channel, or follow updates live via Twitter (@byusoccer).
